Website builder or web designer? An honest NZ comparison (2026)
Squarespace, Wix, Shopify and Rocketspark cost less than a web designer up front. Here is what each one really costs in New Zealand, what three years of each adds up to, and how to tell which one your business needs.
A website builder suits a simple site you’re happy to build and run yourself on a tight budget. A web designer suits a business that needs its website to bring in customers. The rule: if a new customer is worth less than a few hundred dollars and word of mouth already keeps you busy, use a builder. If one extra job a year would cover the difference, hire a designer.
We’re a web design studio, so you’d expect us to say “hire a designer.” We won’t, not for everyone. Builders have got much better, and for plenty of NZ businesses they’re the right call. This guide gives you the real prices, checked on 30 September 2026, and the points where a builder starts costing more than it saves.
What do website builders cost in NZ?
About $17–$59 a month for the plans most small businesses use, plus your time. Four builders come up most for New Zealand businesses:
- Squarespace: NZ$19 a month for Basic, NZ$31 for Core and NZ$49 for Plus, billed yearly (NZ$26, $44 and $69 month to month). Card fees from 2.7% + NZ$0.30 if you sell online.
- Wix: $17 a month for Light, $29 for Core and $39 for Business, billed yearly, as shown to NZ visitors. There’s a free plan to try it, and paid plans include a free domain for the first year.
- Shopify: Basic is US$29 a month billed yearly (US$39 monthly), plus card fees from 2.65% + NZ$0.30. Shopify bills New Zealand stores in US dollars, so the price moves with the exchange rate.
- Rocketspark: NZ$49 a month for Website Builder and NZ$59 for Website Builder Pro, excluding GST, with about two months free if you pay yearly. It’s the New Zealand option, started in Hamilton, and every plan includes phone support.
None of these prices includes the biggest cost: the evenings you spend choosing a template, writing the pages, resizing photos and working out why the mobile menu looks wrong. That’s fine if you enjoy it. It’s expensive if every hour at the laptop is an hour you could have billed.
Builder, freelancer or studio: how do they compare?
A builder costs least up front and gives you least control. A studio costs most up front and does most of the work for you. The freelancer sits in between, and varies the most.
| Website builder | Freelancer | Studio | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $0, plus your time | $800–$4,000 | $3,000–$15,000 |
| Monthly cost | About $17–$59 for the plan | Hosting from about $6, plus updates for WordPress | Hosting and care from about $39 |
| Your time | All of it: build, write, fix, update | The brief, your content, feedback | The brief and feedback |
| SEO control | The settings the platform gives you | Full, if they know SEO | Full, planned before the build |
| Speed | Good by default, but you can’t tune past the template | Depends on the theme and hosting | Built and tested for speed |
| Ownership | You rent it. A Wix site can’t leave Wix | Usually you, but check | You: the files, logins and domain |
| Best for | Testing an idea or a simple site you run yourself | A simple brochure site | Businesses that rely on the site for leads |

When is a website builder the right call?
When the site only needs to exist, not to win work. Don’t hire us, or anyone, yet if:
- You’re testing the business itself. If you don’t know whether it will exist in a year, a NZ$19 Squarespace site is the right amount to spend. Build properly once there’s something proven to promote.
- Word of mouth already keeps you full. If every new customer comes from a referral, the site is a digital business card. A builder does that well.
- You enjoy building it. Some owners like tinkering with their site on a Sunday. That’s a real advantage: you can change it the moment you need to.
- You sell a handful of products online. Shopify Basic is hard to beat for a small shop. We build on Shopify ourselves for exactly that reason.

Builders are also faster than their reputation. In the HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac, 74% of Wix sites passed Google’s Core Web Vitals on mobile, against 45% of WordPress sites. The platform handles hosting, security and updates, which removes most of the ways a small site breaks.
When does a website builder start costing you?
When the site has to compete, not just exist. Four costs show up over time.
1. You hit the template ceiling. A builder is fast and tidy until you want something it doesn’t do: a quote calculator, a layout that fits your services rather than the template’s, a booking flow that matches how you actually work. Then you’re choosing between an app that almost fits and not having it at all.
2. SEO stops at the settings. Every major builder lets you set page titles, descriptions and URLs, and that covers the basics. What ranks a local business is what’s on the pages: a page for each service, answers to the questions customers search, and proof you do the work where they live. A builder doesn’t write that for you, and a template decides how much of it fits on the page. That’s the part we plan before the build on every website design project. If you’re weighing up paying someone for it, our SEO cost guide has the NZ prices.
3. You can’t take it with you. Wix says it plainly: your site “needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers”. You can move the domain, but not the site. Squarespace exports only part of a site to WordPress: layout pages, one blog, text and images. Store pages, product blocks, style settings and custom CSS stay behind. Leaving means rebuilding.
4. Your hours add up. The plan is cheap. The weekends aren’t. If you bill $80 an hour, twenty hours of site fiddling is $1,600, which is most of the way to a designer-built site.

What does a builder cost over three years compared with a designer?
A designer-built site costs roughly $2,300–$4,300 more over three years than a Squarespace Core site, before you count your time. Here are the plan fees and build prices as each provider publishes them.
Plan fees for 36 months at the yearly-billing price: Squarespace Core NZ$31 a month, Wix Business $39 a month, Rocketspark Website Builder NZ$499 a year. Designer bars are our Business ({tier('Business').price}) and Flagship ({tier('Flagship').price}) build prices plus managed hosting at {nzd(hostingMonthly)} a month. Rocketspark and Merlin Wise prices exclude GST. Domains and your own time are left out of every bar.
| Option | Value |
|---|---|
| Squarespace | $1,116 |
| Wix | $1,404 |
| Rocketspark | $1,497 |
| Designer Business | $3.4k–$5.4k |
| Designer Flagship | $5.4k–$9.4k |
So the question is whether a better site brings in $750–$1,450 a year more than a builder site would. For a tiler, a cleaner or a physio, that’s often one job. For a cafe with a $15 average order, it may not be, and a builder is the smarter spend. The break-even calculator in our cost guide does the sum with your own numbers.
What the designer column buys at our studio: a design built for your services, SEO planned before the build, a site that targets 100 Lighthouse scores on mobile and desktop, and everything handed to you at launch, from the code and assets to the logins. If you’d rather edit every page yourself, we build on WordPress with Elementor so you still can.

Can you start on a builder and move later?
Yes, and it’s often the sensible path. Just know what comes with you.
What carries over:
- Your domain, as long as it’s registered in your name. Wix lets you buy and manage the domain with another provider, which makes a later move much simpler. Do that from day one.
- Your words and photos. Keep your own copies. Squarespace’s export covers text and images from layout pages and one blog; from Wix you copy them by hand.
- Your Google Business Profile and reviews. They live with Google, not your website.
- Your rankings, if the move is done properly. Google’s guidance is to redirect every old URL to its new page with a permanent 301 redirect, and it confirms those redirects don’t lose ranking credit.
What doesn’t: the design, the layout, any builder apps (booking, forms, stores) and, on Wix, the site itself. Plan for a rebuild, not a transfer.
A good time to move is when the site is clearly your main source of new enquiries, or when you catch yourself saying “the builder won’t let me” about something that would bring in work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix good for SEO?
Good enough for the technical basics. Wix lets you set titles, descriptions and URLs, handles hosting and security, and in the 2025 Web Almanac Wix sites passed Core Web Vitals more often than WordPress sites. What holds most Wix sites back is thin content and a structure set by the template, not the platform. The bigger risk is lock-in: if you outgrow Wix, you rebuild.
What is the cheapest website builder in NZ?
Wix, on the numbers: it has a free plan, and paid plans start at $17 a month billed yearly. Squarespace starts at NZ$19 a month billed yearly. Rocketspark starts at NZ$49 a month excluding GST, but every plan includes phone support. Compare the plan you’d actually need, not the cheapest one listed.
Squarespace or WordPress for a New Zealand business?
Squarespace if you want one bill and no upkeep: NZ$19–$49 a month covers hosting, security and updates. WordPress if you want full control and a site you can move: the software is free, but you pay for hosting, a build and ongoing updates. Our cost guide covers WordPress running costs in detail.
Can I move my Wix site to WordPress?
Not directly. Wix sites only run on Wix’s servers, so moving means rebuilding the site on WordPress, copying your content across and redirecting your old URLs. Your domain comes with you.
Do web designers use website builders?
Some do, and that’s worth asking about before you pay. Rocketspark and Wix both point you to designers who build on their platforms. You get a professional design, but the site still lives on the builder. We build on WordPress, Laravel and Shopify, and hand over everything at launch.
Not sure which one you need?
If you’ve read this far and still can’t decide, that’s normal: it depends on what a customer is worth to you. We wrote about that in whether a small business needs a website at all. Or tell us about your business and we’ll give you a straight answer within one NZ working day. If a builder is the better call, we’ll say so.
